Aside from the Engine
Companies, the Truck Companies, and ALS Medic Units, the City of
Lincoln Fire and Rescue provides many types of specialty rescue
services when the need arises. The Department also offers EMS Services
at local events that include having a Engine or Truck Company available
during the weekly Farmer’s Market in the Haymarket to check Blood
Pressure and give the general public a chance to see the equipment and
meet the department personal up close and personal.
One
of the biggest services that all of the department Stations offer is a
safe house for the children to come to if they feel threatened. That is
the reason for all of the signs that are outside of the stations.
The
City offers the Paramedic Engine Program which means that at least one
Paramedic is on each of the 14 Engine Companies and this has helped to
get Advanced Life Support to the citizens of the City a lot quicker.
This has led to a large group of saves. The City of Lincoln Fire and
Rescue defines a Save as:“A ‘save’ in our system is defined as a
patient who was in cardiac and/or respiratory arrest being revived in
the field and eventually be discharged from the hospital to go home.” (From the City of Lincoln Fire and
Rescue Website in the section about the Paramedic Engines.)
Each
of the 14 Stations offers free blood pressure screen every day, as
calls and other emergencies permit of course. All of the Stations are
open to the general public also.
Beside
the services that I have mentioned about the Department has a fully
staffed and functional HazMat Team that has been showcased in Firehouse
Magazine and on Firehouse.com.
The department also has a fully staffed and trained Technical Rescue
Team, this includes a Technical Rescue Trailer that sits by Station 1,
a Dive Rescue Team and trailers and equipment, a Honor Guard Unit, and
members who are part of the Urban Search and Rescue Nebraska Task Force
1. The department also offers Fire Safety training for the kids and
families of the City. They also offer a Smoke Detector Program and
equipment to train the general public with CPR skills.
HazMat
Response
The Department's HazMat Unit operates out of Station 14 and
is a 2000 Emergency One. HazMat 14 is just part of several pieces of
Equipment that respond to Major and minor HazMat incidents.
The Pictures below come from the Lincoln Fire And Rescue Department's
Website. They were taken in June of 2005 at a major HazMat incident. To
see more pictures from this incident please check out the Department's
Photo page for 2005.

The Technical Rescue Trailer is located across the street from Station
